The message was not lost in the shuffle. While the movie was successful, it wasn't exactly a money-making machine, though it was nominated for several awards, including the 1971 Best Picture Oscar. In the long run, the director's 14 year old son who wrote the lyrics to the theme song, "Suicide is Painless", made more money from the film than anyone else involved. However, in 1972, the movie studio released the rights for the film to be adapted into a comedy Television series, and so M*A*S*H as we know it, was born ... Set in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital near the front lines in the Korean War, Captain Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce is a surgeon who was drafted into the war effort. He doesn't want to be there, but he's a dedicated surgeon nonetheless, and he'll do just about anything to keep his sanity. His hilariously outrageous pranks, humor, and alcholism are only one part of a show that grew from an ensemble cast surrounding "Hawkeye" (Alan Alda), to a true ensemble family of characters that became so important to American TV Culture, that after 11 seasons, M*A*S*H ended with a 2½ hour grand finale episode viewed by over 106 million Americans, making it the most watched episode in television history.
